In the fall of 2017, while researching the devastating aftermath of the forest fires in Portugal, I unexpectedly came across a small valley on the Atlantic Ocean, in the middle of the burned forests of Leiria / Marinha Grande. A place of ancient beauty, wild and pristine, encircled by square kilometers of black destruction. In 2021 I returned to photograph. The reality of the fires in Europe and the world had progressed unstoppably. In 2022, Portugal is experiencing the hottest summer on record, with temperatures exceeding 45°C, and again the forests are burning.

KLEINOD /beauty spot is about places and things that are easily overlooked. It’s about the moment, the fleeting, the magic of the moment. Following the flow of energy, the endless play of light and weather, wind and silence, the perpetual change.
